Woodstock is where the interstate arrived after the houses did, and the road names still show it. I-575 exit 8 is called Towne Lake Parkway because it serves Towne Lake, whose build-out began in the late 1980s — the interchange takes the development's name rather than a road that was already there. Exit 9 at Ridgewalk Parkway is more recent still: it opened in 2012, which makes the northern half of the city's interstate access newer than a large share of the vehicles on it.
That sequence produces a specific traffic pattern. The city grew around an arterial network — GA-92 and GA-205 — that was designed for a smaller place, and then had interstate ramps threaded into it. The result is a set of interchanges where a driver leaving 70mph interstate traffic reaches a suburban arterial intersection in a very short distance, which is the geometry behind a disproportionate share of the collisions we see out of Cherokee County.
It is also the closest of our Cherokee towns in the way that matters. Woodstock is 12.8 road miles from the Marietta office and about seventeen minutes with no traffic. Roswell is 13.8 miles and takes 26. The mile of difference is not the point; the point is that one route is interstate and the other is not. Cases arising here are filed at the Cherokee County Justice Center in Canton, another eleven miles up I-575.
